Clients Are Asking To Find Ways To Work With Less Water, While Also Introducing More Showerheads In Elegant Master Bathroom Showers.

Media rooms? Out. Multipurpose game rooms? In.

Sprawling square footage? Out. Compact and energy efficient? In.

As San Antonio peers into 2012, five custom-home builders share their ideas of what trends are taking off here and which ones are fading away.

There is much mutual understanding.

Clients are asking to find ways to utilize less water, while also incorporating more showerheads in custom master bathroom showers and jacuzzi. They are asking for eco-friendly features that can can be expensive more up front but provide long-term cost savings, such as tankless water heaters. And they are generally asking for a more minimalist, clean-line look.

Don Craighead Homes

Don Craighead associated with Don Craighead Homes sees a trend toward smaller homes. Many clients now ask for a home in the 3,500- for you to 4,000-square-foot range; a few years ago, they could have gone for 6,000 for you to 7,000 square feet.

“They're only scared to commit with the level they were before,” Craighead affirms.

For Craighead, building green will be picking up steam.

“I've been promoting it for about three years,” he says. “They're interested in it, even though they know it's going to cost more.”

Such consumers envision energy and normal water costs going up and are searching for longer-term savings. They are requesting squirt foam insulation and tankless water heaters.

Meanwhile, clients are nonetheless wanting top-of-the-line appliances, lighting fixtures along with plumbing fixtures - only in a more compact and energy-efficient home.

While the Mediterranean look will be “still pretty hot,” Craighead is experiencing more straight lines along with contemporary features.

What's passed by the wayside? For Craighead's clients, oahu is the media room. Most pick instead to hang a huge flat-screen TV above the fireplace or for the wall of a great room.

Sierra Residences

To Teresa Fransik of Sierra Homes, the largest current trend is also downsizing.

“We're stepping into that era of the not-so-big house, wherever clients are building not amount but quality,” Fransik says. “The established term is a ‘jewel box' - small but tricked out.”

Your ex firm, a green-home building organization that operates within with regards to 50 miles of Fredericksburg, has not really built large homes because of her focus on vitality efficiency. But in the last five years or so, the norm of wanted square footage has declined through about 3,000 or even 3,500 square feet to around 2,500.

Her customers are asking for super energy-efficient homes, together with rainwater collection systems, long term solar connections and whole-house upturn protection.

“They're looking at the possibility in the future of trying to make certain they're protected against rising energy fees, brown-outs, reduction in water supplies. Those ideas are starting to be important,” Fransik affirms.

They are choosing low-flow water lighting fixtures and dual-flush toilets; other eco-friendly elements such as low-VOC (volatile organic substance) paint and sealants are often regular now and “not as unusual as they were 10 years back.”

For flooring, carpet has gone out; hardwood, concrete and floor tile are in.

As for design, easy and basic is the desired look, she says. “They're not getting a lot of interior trim details. There's not a lot of glitz along with glamour.”

Mike Hollaway

While home size is coming down a little bit, Mike Hollaway of Mike Hollaway Custom Residences sees clients asking for more charm within the square footage; for example, some may steer those same dollars directly into better appliances or more floor tile work.

Clients are willing to placed more money for quality home windows and foam insulation due to energy efficiency. They are shelling out for gourmet kitchens and backyard living areas that include cooktops, those that smoke, fireplaces, under-counter refrigerators, icemakers and integrative fountains and pools as reported tagza.com.
